Splashskins - The Effects of Sunburn
on Your Children
One
bad childhood sunburn doubles the risk of getting skin cancer later
in life.
Over
80% of a person’s lifetime exposure to the sun occurs by age 18.
Sunscreen
is messy and chemically-based! A sun-protective swimsuit will lessen
the amount of skin you'll need to screen.
Most
doctors recommend avoiding sunscreen for babies, according to Dr. Rew
Amonette, former president of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Ultraviolet
light is the primary cause of skin cancer.
Children
and young adults, who have unprotected sun exposure and sunburn, have
a higher risk of developing skin cancer and melanoma (the most serious
form of skin cancer) in adulthood.
Melanoma
is one of the most common cancers in people younger than 30.
It
is projected in 2005 that approximately 1 person will die every hour
from skin cancer.
One
in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime.
There
has been a 10% increase in new cases of melanoma from 2004.
BE SAFE! PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN WITH UV PROTECTIVE SWIM WEAR AND CLOTHING!

Clothing and swim wear must have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor)
of at least 15 to be considered sun protective.
A typical t-shirt has a UPF of 7 (Source: Morehouse School of Medicine).
Splashskins
are UPF 50+ (blocking out 97.5% of the sun's damaging
rays). SHOP NOW!

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection factor, and is a measure of the
amount of ultraviolet radiation that a fabric blocks. UPF is similar
to, but not the same as, the more familiar term SPF (sun Protection
Factor), which measures how much longer it will take skin to begin to
redden in the sun using the rated sunscreen product than if the skin
was unprotected.
UV Index
The ozone layer shields the Earth from harmful UV radiation. Ozone
depletion, as well as seasonal and weather variations, cause different
amounts of UV radiation to reach the Earth at any given time. Developed
by the National Weather Service (NWS) and EPA, the UV Index predicts
the next day's ultraviolet radiation levels on a 0-10+ scale, helping
people determine appropriate sun-protective behaviors. EPA has developed
a program for elementary schools--sun safety will become part of the
curriculum over the next few years.
